这本书, 本月公布的, consists of 21 essays from a variety of scholars who explore the diverse, oppressive and often violent experiences of persons of African descent across Canada’s history.

“这意味着突破界限, or at least force us to think about those boundaries – it’s by no means a polite representation of Canadian history,”Aladejebi说, 这本书的联合编辑是文学院的助理教授 & 科学系的历史系.

Historical essays include “Planting Slavery in Nova Scotia’s Promised Land, 由历史学家和卡洛琳·斯马兹·弗罗斯特教授所写, and “A Forgotten Generation: African Canadian 历史 between Fugitive Slaves and World War I” by Adam Arenson, a professor of history and director of the urban studies program at Manhattan College.

More contemporary works include: “The part of you that’s Rwanda: Creating a Rwandan Diaspora Community in the Greater Toronto Area in the Early Twenty-First Century” by York University graduate student, Anna Ainsworth; and “Wrestling with Multicultural Snake Oil: A Newcomer’s Introduction to 黑色的 Canada” by Daniel McNeil, a professor and Queen's National Scholar Chair in 黑色的 Studies at Queen's University.

“这本书果然名不虚传,”Aladejebi说. “It desires to unsettle the way we think about Canada as a white space both figuratively and metaphorically. It seeks to unsettle our understandings of Canadian history and 黑色的 Canadian studies.”

Including essays that extend from the historical to the contemporary was done deliberately to show how the history connects to – and influences – current patterns of 黑色的 settlement and belonging in Canada.

“黑色的 Canadian history is not something that happened in the past – it's constantly changing and evolving,”Aladejebi说, noting that greater knowledge of historical foundations leads to a better understanding of today’s environments.

“在2020年的夏天,澳门赌场平台是如何进行种族清算的?”她问. “在加拿大的背景下,这是从哪里来的? There's a history, but that history fundamentally affects how we see communities today.”

为学生设计的, 寻找内容的大专教授, 社区领袖和公众, 这本书的贡献者跨越了几个学科——历史, 地理位置, 社会学, 性别研究, cultural studies and law – many of whom cross over disciplines in their teaching and research.

“在很多方面, scholars have had to be interdisciplinary because most of our disciplines do not do enough to tell the complex story of 黑色的ness,”Aladejebi说.

四年的努力, the book was born out of frustration for Aladejebi and co-editor Michele Johnson, 约克大学历史系的教授.

“We created the volume as a response to inquiries from students who wanted to get a sense of the national breadth of 黑色的 Canadian history and 黑色的 Canadian studies,”Aladejebi说. “But there simply wasn’t a great deal of organized material to work from, 所以黑人研究课程的材料常常是零碎的.”

“He's an American historian and he didn't think about 黑色的ness in the way we talk about 黑色的ness now. 所以澳门赌场平台想, ‘Why don't we create a more comprehensive review of 黑色的 Canadian history across chronology and 地理位置 to tell a more national story of 黑色的ness in Canada?”

“My chapter is about how we conduct oral histories on living communities”Aladejebi说. “How can we use oral history as a way to understand 黑色的 Canadian populations and to speak to the absences in the archives around 黑色的 women's experiences more specifically?”

Aladejebi has been active with lively events that have bolstered discussions about 黑色的 Canadian history.

Aladejebi and panelists highlighted the role 黑色的 educators have played and continue to play in institutional and pedagogical change at all levels of learning, 包括大学.

这本书, the active events and discussions demonstrate that “the field of 黑色的 Canadian studies is incredibly rich and diverse, 现在是时候进一步推动这一领域了,”Aladejebi说.

它值得批判性的探究、批判性的研究和检验. 在这本书, there’s lots you can use to begin your own work on 黑色的 Canadian studies and history.

“This volume will help the general public and educators be able to say, “我知道加拿大早期的奴役是什么样子的, 我对加拿大早期移民的模式有一种感觉, I have a sense of what 黑色的 communities were looking like in Vancouver, 以及新斯科舍省的情况,’”她说.

“接受它,利用它,进行更多令人不安的对话,并保持下去. 这就是澳门赌场平台的目标,保持这个领域的发展和发展.”
